Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.” ~ Steve Jobs

Weekend Posts are always a little hard for me. I try to not be in a train of thought and weekends are my time to do the me things. I work three jobs. Two are the work for someone else kind and the third is my photography business. The weekends are also my time to work on my upcoming Wylde Woman Art Show (WWAS).
What is that? Well it started in 2013 -a seriously auspicious year for me and change and directions in life by the way. I had just finished a one man show in a cafe’ that showcases local artists. I was moving some of my pieces next door to the Wine Bar-that also features local artists. The friend helping me hang was Tess. She sculpts these amazing small life realistic fairies and is a talented painter as well. Her topic is the human figure.
Problem? We live in a really conservative smallish town that thinks that nudity is not a family friendly thing. While the “governing” Arts Council and Arts League do not specifically ban or have language that bans it in the member shows, rarely will you find nudity of either gender. I cannot say Never, because my friend Gustavo Castillo, a photographer had nudity in his show at the SEAD Gallery in DT Bryan and of course in 2014 the WWAS had it’s first Show and figured female nudity prominently. The first year the theme was Celebration of the Female Figure.
It was a HUGE HIT. We had over 600 visitors in the two weeks it was up and running. It cost me $200.00, everything else was done via Social Media and donations by supporting friends. I was blown away. I had never expected that response. I thought maybe a couple of artists and a few pieces. Well we had 21 artists and 42 pieces…incredible. I was not going to do it again but kept receiving inquiries about a show this year and finally said yes. I knew that with your tour coming up, I was going to need help, so I went to Tess and asked her to become a co-founder to the show…thank god she said yes.
This year we are going to tackle our Call to Entry Theme is Challenging Accepted Archetypes: Artistic and Model Commentary on the Sexes, Gender Roles, and Gender Identity.
The show this year is different. It is a juried Fine Art Show. There will be a $1000.00 Best in Show Prize. We are only accepting 15 entries and our 16th entry is going to be the winner from the local colleges Visualization Lab-who is holding their own contest to pick one entry.
Our local LGBT community is a supporter and I am reaching out to the other LGBT communities in Texas. We are also reaching out to all the Art Guilds in Texas to push the word out there for the Call to Entry. I expect we will have an amazing selection of art to choose from. Each piece will have it’s own story. We are only asking for an entry fee from the artists. The show is open to the public free of charge over a 48 hour period. This year it is being held at a local tattoo parlor in DT Bryan as we were refused rental space by another rental space in the DT Bryan, because they were afraid of the “potential” imagery of the pieces….selective art supporter is what I call that…and a true demonstration of how the censorship is handled here….not outright that is for sure. The weekend is the 4th and 5th of December and it is on one of the biggest weekends in the DT Bryan schedule as it is the First Friday before Christmas AND it is usually fairly nice weather.
Saturday the 5th we close the show at 5pm and are having a ticketed reception where you can meet the artists-or as many as can make it to the reception. We will feature another friend of mine Laura, who will be performing a piece of Written Word written specifically for the show. There is also going to be another friend of mine who is the most amazing makeup artist and she is going to feature two live models painted specifically for the show…
We close the show with an auction. The bidding opens at $500.00 and will increase in increments of $100.00. We do not take a commission cut this year off of the artist work. So all the money goes to them.
So that is what I do on the weekends…and process any music or other shoots I may have had during the week….
